Declutter Before Spring

Spring is just around the corner and this is a time when the weather starts warming up and we feel like getting out more and getting things done. Before spring is here, it is a good idea to start decluttering your home and life. Here are some tips on how to start now!

  1. declutter before spring cleaning

Spring is a good time to deep clean your entire home and before you tackle the cleaning part you should take the opportunity and declutter every space and sort all the belongings that you no longer need. Getting rid of unnecessary items might leave you with empty shelves or spaces that need to be dusted and cleaned so it is a good time to go through every space before you do your spring cleaning.

  2. make a seasonal clean up in your closet

There is a term in Japan called “Koromogae” which you use when you switch your seasonal clothing and that usually happens twice a year. In Japan, the space in the closet is limited due to the size of the living spaces so people have the habit of leaving out only the clothing they wear for each season and put away the rest so it doesn’t take too much space in the closet. I know that depending on where you live, especially in the US, you have big homes and enough room to leave all season’s clothing out all year long but we should still go through our closet before the change of seasons and eliminate items that were not worn at all in that past season or re-organize clothing by putting the ones that are off-season in the back of the closet or drawer. By doing so you can end up finding more items that you no longer care for.

  3. declutter your workspace

This is also a good time to declutter your workspace. Clear all filed paper, documents, and receipts that you don’t need from your desk and make sure you only have your most essential work tools on your desk. Organize drawers and re-stock all your stationery supplies. A clean and organized workspace brings you more clarity, focus, and productivity.

  4. don’t forget about the outside

There is no point in tidying up your entire house if the outside is still dirty and messy. Make sure you get to your outdoor area as well by cleaning you porch, balcony, outdoor furniture, or backyard. Spring is the time to get rid of all the dead plants and start planting new beautiful plants and crops if you have a vegetable garden. The exterior of your home is just as important as the interior and this is a great time to make it all look nice and inviting!

Start now wherever you can in your own space. By decluttering and cleaning up both outside and inside of your home you will start the spring with a fresh calm home which will definitely have an impact in all aspects of your life!
