How to Style a Console Table

This is the first blog post of a series on “How to Style” specific spaces. It can be overwhelming to style a console table especially as it is often by your entry and the first thing guests will see when they walk in your home. Here are some tips for you to consider when styling a console table.

  1. focal point

The first thing to think about is to create a focal point. Something in a big scale such as an art piece or a mirror. That is where people’s eyes will go first before it travels over to the rest of the space. When picking the focal point, consider the colors and how it will blend in with the rest of your home. You should also consider the wall space and how you will fill it. It shouldn’t be too narrow or too short. A good rule of thumb is to cover at least 2/3 of the width of the console and about the same height as the console table.

  2. balance

Balance is one of the key elements when it comes to styling. Consider the scale of the pieces on either side of the console and try to create balance on both sides. For example, if you have a large lamp on the left, adding a vase on the right with a similar scale or size can easily bring balance.

  3. Play with shapes and heights

Mixing different shapes creates a cohesive vignette. Round and organic shapes add harmony to straight square lines so think about the shape of the console table, art piece, or mirror, and play with different shapes to create harmony within the objects you place on them. Play with heights of each item creating a rhythm between objects, everything should be in different heights.

  4. add nature

Bring a sense of calm by incorporating nature in the form of a plant, a vase with tall branches, or a flower arrangement. You can also add some wooden bowls and decorative items with a natural texture to bring warmth to your space. There is nothing more inviting than being greeted by some beautiful greenery or arrangement when you step in someone’s home.

  5. Keep it minimal

You don’t have to fill all the space on your console table. Leave some room to breathe and think about functionality as well. Make sure you have enough space on top of your console in case you need to drop something there temporarily. It is a good idea to use a decorative bowls or baskets to collect small items. Make it minimal but also functional!

Follow these simple tips and create your own welcoming and calm console table in which will set the mood for the rest of the home when your guests walk in!
